JULIUS KLINGER (1876-1942) DIE LUSTIGE WOCHE. 1906.
26 1/2x36 3/4 inches. Hollerbaum & Schmidt, Berlin.
Condition B+: vertical and horizontal folds.
Moving from Vienna where he had studied art, Klinger settled in Berlin to work for Hollerbaum & Schmidt and magazines such as Die Lustige Blatter<>. A prolific, versatile and inventive graphic artist, his style ranged from the strictly typographic to daring constructions. It is clear, however, that he prefered creating posters using his skill as a genius cartoonist. Klinger loved animals in general and birds in particular, and often caricatured them. Here, against a black background with flat bright colors, this bird of fancy surprises and amuses the eye, just like the magazine which it is advertising.
