JULIUS KLINGER (1876-1950) PALM CIGARREN. Circa 1906.
27 1/2x37 1/4 inches, 70x94 1/2 cm. Hollerbaum & Schmidt, Berlin.
Condition B+: creases and light staining in margins and image; vertical fold. Paper.
Klinger studied art in Vienna but worked in Berlin for the printer and publisher, Hollerbaum & Schmidt, as well as for the satiric magazine, Lustige Blätter. He was a prolific, versatile and inventive graphic artist, with a style that ranged from the flat tones and strong outlining popular in Germany at the time, to strictly typographic pieces and bold and daring graphic constructions. It is evident, however, that his preferred mode of design was through caricature. We have been unable to find another copy of this poster at auction. rare Klinger 16, DFP-III 1645, Wember 470, Fruhe Berliner 558, Weill 176.
