JUPP WIERTZ (1881-1939) DER JUNGGESELLE. Circa 1925.
33 3/4x24 3/4 inches, 85 3/4x63 cm. Hermann Baswitz, Berlin.
Condition B+: minor repaired tears and abrasions at edges; minor creases in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds; pin holes in corners. Mounted on Chartex.
"Wiertz sold dreams and charm, with his elegant but never vulgar young women" (Weill p. 174). Here he presents a flamboyant portrait of a beauty reading the fashion magazine, The Youth Companion. The clothing and accessories emphasize her place in society and lavish observance of cutting edge fashions. The haughty slogan, "New today, sold out tomorrow," goes very well with her self-satisfied demeanor.
