Jackson, Charles Thomas (1805-1880)
A Manual of Etherization: Containing Directions for the Employment of Ether, Chloroform, and other Anaesthetic Agents, by Inhalation, in Surgical Operations. Author's Presentation Copy.

Boston: Published for the author by J.B. Mansfield, 1861.

First edition, octavo, inscribed on ffep, "Hon. H. Hamlin Vice President of the United States with the respects of the Author, C.T. Jackson," in a neat hand; bound in publisher's full brown cloth, boards embossed in blind, spine lettered in gilt; headcap chipped away, front joint cracked, boards still attached, 7 1/ 2 x 4 3/4 in.

Jackson engaged in a dramatic public fight with William T.G. Morton sometimes called the Ether War. Although the modern take on the dispute names Morton as the prime innovator, Jackson was strongly unwilling to defer the honor. In the end, Morton allowed a 10% share on his patent to Jackson. Doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital, where the first inhaled ether anesthesia surgery took place under Morton, provide a mixed picture. They found that Morton should be given credit for the initial discovery of ether's potential as a surgical anesthesia, but that he never would have been able to put his theory into practical action without scientific consultation from Jackson.
