Jones, Loïs Mailou (1905-1998)
The Musicians.

New York: Limited Editions Club, 1996.

Color screen print on cream wove paper, full margins, signed and numbered 22/60 in pencil, lower margin, 20 5/8 x 16 1/2 in.

One of a series of five silkscreen print illustrations created by Jones to accompany the LEC's edition of West African poet Léopold Sédar Senghor's Poems. The poet's focus on literary and artistic expression surrounding the black African experience compliments Jones's own interest in the Négritude movement. With a career spanning seven decades, 1928 Howard University graduate Jones was actively working in New York during the Harlem Renaissance or New Negro Movement. In this energetic image, a swing band performs in the foreground, while five dancers in white perform on the stage behind.
