First edition of Boner's German translation, folio, illustrated with very large woodcut to title page depicting Ninus and Alexander (by Breu the elder after Burgkmair) and text woodcuts throughout by Jörg Breu the elder and younger, Hans Weiditz, and other artists, 119 numbered leaves, A-V6 (final leaf blank & present); a few woodcut initials and tail-pieces by Hans Burgkmair; bound in full contemporary blind roll-tooled calf boards, neatly rebacked and housed in a custom slipcase, with new endleaves and pastedowns, near-contemporary marginal notes (dated 1569 on verso of last leaf of text) on title and in the text; a large, untrimmed copy, with deckle edges and all notes intact; lacking the original cloth ties, an attractive copy of the first edition; 12 1/8 x 8 in.
Boner's German-language translation introduced Justinus's Epitome of Gnaeus Pompeius Trogus's history to the German vernacular audience for the first time. Trogus, also known as Pompey Trogue, was a first century BCE Celtic Gallo-Roman who lived under the reign of Octavian at about the same time as Livy. The inspiration for the present work, Trogue's Philippic Histories consisted of forty-four books, and only comes down to us in fragments. Justinus's Epitome is the fullest surviving, if truncated version of the text.
The Fairfax-Murray copy is bound together with Boner's translation of Herodian, which was also printed by Steyner in Augsburg in 1531.
