K. G. CHAPMAN (DATES UNKNOWN) SHELL LUBRICATING OIL. Circa 1939.
30x45 inches.
Condition A.
Shell used hundreds of designers for the company's advertising. Some were famous, others were not. But if the artist on this image is unknown, the ship he depicts was quite famous -- The New Mauretania took her maiden voyage in 1939. Here the sleek vessel is seen from the deck of another ship (presumably much slower), surrounded by the vast ocean as she makes her way across the sea from Southampton to New York. In the foreground, navy flags spell out "I wish you a pleasant voyage." This may be the only Shell poster to feature an ocean liner.
