KARL BICKEL (1886-1982) KLAUSEN RENNEN. 1925.
501/2x35 inches. Wolfsberg, Zurich.
Condition B+: restoration and restored losses in margins.
Bickel worked primarily as a painter and an engraver and is best known for his Alpine monument to peace, the Pax-Mal, a project that took him 25 years to complete. Like most prominent artists of his era, Bickel accepted several poster commissions. They are bold and inspired, dramatic and suggestive. The classic rare racing image for Klausen Rennen is a good example, with the huge racing car surrounded by the mountains rushing full speed towards the viewer. The colors, which change from a dominating yellow to blue are those from a master painter. From 1922 to 1934 the Klausen Rennen was the most famous of all the Alpine mountain-climbing car races. This is the German version. Schweiz p. 43, Margadant 524, Swiss Sport 18.
