KARL BICKEL (1886-1982) SEIDEN-GRIEDER / ZÜRICH. 1916.
50 1/4x35 inches, 128x89 cm. Gebr. Fretz, Zurich.
Condition B+ / A-: repaired tears at edges, some slightly affecting image; creases, wrinkles and abrasions at edges and in image.
Karl Bickel worked primarily as a painter and an engraver and is best known for his alpine monument to peace, the Pax-Mal, a project that took him 25 years to complete. Bickel was also one of the most active poster designers in Zurich, flirting with a light Art Deco style to promote elegant places like the Elite or the Savoy Hotel along with several luxury stores. Seiden-Grieder, one of the poshest stores, always picked top artists, like Otto Baumbager or Charles Loupot, to promote their brand. This early Art Deco poster, in its light and inspired mannerist approach, is somewhat reminiscent of Loupot's work. In a graceful style, Bickel depicts a stylish woman out amidst swirling fall foliage. Femme 186.
