KARL WILHELM KOLBE THE ELDER (ATTRIBUTED TO)
(Berlin 1757-1835 Dessau)
An Old Oak and a Farm House in a Wooded Landscape.

Brush and gray and black wash and pen and black ink on cream wove paper. 526x433 mm; 203/4x171/8 inches. Inscribed "Kolbe fec" in ink, lower right recto.

Kolbe, who had trained to be a philologist, went to the academy in Berlin in 1790 to study drawing. Throughout his artistic career, his real interest was landscape, to which most of his drawings and, from 1793, his etchings were devoted. In the course of his career, Kolbe gradually retreated from the tradition of the Arcadian drawings of the period, turning more to the fantastic aspects of nature.
