In 1732, Conrad Beissel began an experiment in faith in Ephrata, Pennsylvania, a splinter group of the German Baptist Brethren, winning over many followers. The spiritual community which lasted until Beissel's death in 1768, built eight major structures and several smaller ones. In 1941, the site was taken over by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
