KATHERINE MILHOUS (1894-1977) VISIT HISTORIC EPHRATA PENNSYLVANIA. Circa 1941.
20 3/4x16 1/2 inches.

In 1732 Conrad Beissel began an experiment in faith in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. A splinter group of the German Baptist Brethren, Beissel preached a different kind of spiritual mysticism and was able to win over many followers. The spiritual community lasted until Beissel's death in 1768, before which they had thrived and prospered, building eight major structures and several smaller ones. In 1941 the site was taken over by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
