Schmidt (1899-1978) was born in Ohio and moved to New York by 1910 with her family, where she studied at the Art Students League through her teens. She was a founding member of the Whitney Studio Club in 1918 and exhibited regularly in New york during the 1920s and 1930s, with a focus on still life paintings and scenes of the city.

Schmidt married fellow artist Yasuo Kuniyoshi (1889-1953) in 1919 which caused her parents to cut her off from the family and formally disown her, and due to Kuniyoshi's standing as a Japanese immigrant, she lost her American citizenship. Schmidt and Kuniyoshi divorced in 1932, through they remained friends and artistic supporters until the latter's death in 1953 (Schmidt was at Kuniyoshi's bedside when he died).
