KAZUYA SAKAI (1927 - 2001, ARGENTINE/AMERICAN)
Miles Davis Bitches Brew (I).

Acrylic on canvas, 1973. Signed, Sakai, dated, 73, inscribed, Kazuya Sakai, and inscribed as titled on verso. 1300x1300 mm; 51¼x51¼ inches. Bears Galería Juan Martín, Mexico City, label on frame verso.

Argentinian artist of Japanese lineage, Kazuya Sakai was influenced by the Gutai group of Japan and was a member of de Artistas Modernos in Argentina. His interests in art were coupled with a background in philosophy and literature. He translated twentieth century Japanese literature into Spanish and, while living in Mexico co-founded the magazine, Plural. His early gestural abstractions gave way to a geometric format. This painting dates from this period of his career.
