Kcho (sometimes spelled K'cho or stylized KCHO) was born Alexis Leyva Machado (born 1972) on Isla de Pinos (now Isla de la Juventud), Cuba. Showing a proclivity towards the arts from a young age, he enrolled in the Escuela Nacional de Arte, Havana in 1986 and graduated in 1990. His works has been exhibited internationally and are held in the permanent collections of several important institutions, including the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Kcho usually works in multiple media, and is inspired by his childhood spent close to the ocean and Cuban folk art.
