Additional Details

A fine example of this wonderfully decorative world map from the Golden Age of Dutch cartography in original hand-color. Appreciated for its cartes-a-figures design and style, the map is a "skillful copy" (Shirley) of Willem Blaeu's world map of 1606, with little changed save for the addition of several descriptive legends, including Arctic information and a belief that the Straits of Anian and Davis connect to form the potential of a Northwest Passage. This is the fourth state of Keere's engraving, with Jansson's imprint but undated. Shirley 264.
