Kehinde Wiley painted this striking portrait of a Fulani woman when he was a student at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. Fulani women are known for their large gold earrings, wich represent the status of the woman. The Fulani trive are descendants of North Africa and live primarily in West Africa today.
Born in Los Angeles, California in 1977, Wiley's father is Yoruba from Nigeria, and his mother is African-American. Wiley painted a series of African women in tribal and regional costume while in high school. He earned his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1999 and his MFA from Yale University in 2001.
