Additional Details

"My heart warmed as at the touch of a sunbeam when your sweet letter was spelled out in my hand. My teacher and I thank you, not only for your sympathy and friendship, but also for your beautiful understanding of our affection for each other. My life has lived in hers so long that when I am away from her even a few days, I feel quite adrift. So you can imagine how anxious I have felt during her illness. I have wondered what would become of me if anything happened to her. How dark and empty the world would be without her. I should be left without purpose, prospect or horizon. . . . [H]ow impossible it would be for another woman to fill the void in my life that Mrs. Macy has filled all these years! . . ."
Provenance: From the estate of the Hammond family; thence by purchase to current owner.
