KENNETH D. SHOESMITH SOUTHSEA & PORTSMOUTH. 1932.
40x49 inches. Waterlow & Sons, London.
Condition B+: repaired tears and restored losses in margins; vertical and horizontal folds.
Shoesmith was primarily a maritime painter and the majority of his posters depict ships. He designed posters for both the British Rail Companies as well as the Canadian Pacific. Here two stylish women in matching wraps and caps are watching the activity in the busy harbor, which is filled with ocean liners, paddle wheel steamers, battleships and motorboats, as well as two airplanes overhead. They are standing next to Victory's Anchor a memorial embodying Portsmouth's military and naval history.
