KIKI SMITH
Leap Year.

Set of 3 color photopolymer intaglio prints on white wove paper, 2014. 295x230 mm; 11¾x9 inches (sheets), full margins. Each signed, dated and numbered 11/13 in pencil, lower margin. Printed and published by P.R.I.N.T., University of North Texas, Denton, with the blind stamp lower right on each sheet.

According to Lari Gibbons, Professor of Studio Art and Director, P.R.I.N.T., "We also began the Leap Year series with a photo shoot of Kiki holding hand-made paper sculptures that she had brought with her. Kiki also asked student volunteers to pose so that she could make framing decisions behind the camera. After selecting eight key images as the basis of the suite, Kiki identified additional pictorial elements she wanted layered together digitally, including different spatial environments and figurative parts. She reinterpreted the source images, asking us to pull sections from some and place them in others while generating new digital components from scratch." Gibbons also explained the printmaking process used to make these prints: "To create a color photopolymer print, a digital image is separated into four separate channels—cyan, magenta, yellow and black—each of which is mechanically printed onto a transparent film. In a darkroom, the films are exposed onto photosensitive plates which are then developed and cured. Each plate is inked in a different color and hand-printed in registration on a fine art press."
