KIMBEI, KUSAKABE (1841-1934) An elegant album with 50 hand-colored photographs, including scenes near Yokohama, Tokyo, and Kamakura, as well as a theater, cherry blossoms, a wisteria garden, bridges, lakes, temples, tea houses, and several occupational scenes of geishas. Hand-colored albumen prints, each approximately 7 7/8x9 3/4 inches (20x24.8 cm.), and the reverse; with the original tissue guards, most with a caption in the negative. Oblong folio, red lacquer covers, the front depicting a landscape with birds and bamboo, with pearl inlay (some missing) and applied gold, and the rear a floral and bird motif; backstrip restored with contemporary leather; with Kimbei's oval hand stamp on the front pastedown; all edges gilt. 1880s
