Ornately bound lacquer album containing 100 rich, delicately hand-tinted photographs of Japan, with costume studies, samurai, occupationals, female teahouse performers and lovely geishas, landscape views, and street scenes. Hand-tinted albumen prints, 7 3/4x9 3/4 inches (19.8x25.7 cm.), with the original tissue guards, and a caption, in English, and an inventory number in the negative. Oblong folio, black lacquer night-time scene of a large owl perched on a branch sheltering a traditional Japanese home, with gilt highlights, and ivory and mother-of-pearl inlay, on front cover; all edges gilt. Circa 1889
