Additional Details

According to Asian photographs expert Clark Worswick, Kusakabe is considered "the great Japanese commercial photographer of the nineteenth century." The album contains a strong selection of his artistically colored views by this practitioner, who was Von Stillfried's operator, eventually buying his stock when the latter departed Japan in the mid-1880s. Kusakabe's speciality was "the penetrating studio portrait of the Japanese sitter." cf. <
