Additional Details

A classic photograph recording a gathering of African American leaders with members of the Kennedy administration. The meeting was held in the wake of the murder of Medgar Evers. It was at this "summit" that A Philip Randolph told President Kennedy that they were planning a March on Washington for "Jobs and Freedom." Kennedy was not at all receptive at first, but was eventually persuaded that a peaceful march would be infinitely preferable to people getting out in the streets.
