Additional Details

Early in 1964, Martin Luther King Jr. learned that he had been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Arrangements were made for King to travel to Europe. His itinerary included an audience with Pope Paul VI and a visit to West Berlin in September. While in Berlin, King was to give a speech at the Waldbühne. King's sermon on Cain and Abel was a not-so-subtle reference to divided Germany and the Berlin Wall. Against the protestations of the U.S. State Department, King appeared together with Protestant bishop and theologian, Dr. Otto Dibelius, and a black choir from the United States. During World War II Dibelius had fought for freedom of religious expression and opposed Nazi church policy. This poster was designed by radical Austrian artist Reinhard Braun.
