"Thank you very much for yours of Aug. 19th with the cutting. It is one of the nicest and most rounded tales I've come across in a long time and I only pray that it may be time. It seems too good for this sad world of ours."
The recipient of this letter might have been author William Wymark Jacobs, whose short story "The Monkey's Paw" first appeared in the September, 1902 issue of Harper's Monthly. In the letter, Kipling refers to a "cutting," suggesting a magazine or newspaper clipping: possibly Jacobs's "A Tiger's Skin," which was originally published in the June, 1902 issue of The Strand.
