first edition in book form of an influential work outlining the "Kirkbride Plan" for the design and construction of mental hospitals, which became the standard in the United States during the second half of the 19th century; originally published the same year in The American Journal of Insanity. Kirkbride (1809-83), who ran the Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane from 1840 until his death, was one of the founders of Association of Medical Superintendents of American Institutions of the Insane (later the American Psychiatric Association).
