Additional Details

In July 1781, Knox was leading Washington's artillery as they began their long march to Virginia that would end at Yorktown. Here, he writes to the Quartermaster General Pickering concerning his transport needs for the journey: "I am informed that no horses have been sent to King's Ferry, notwithstanding the arrangement which you made with me reflecting that matter on the 10th instant. I request you to inform me explicitly when the horses will be ready." He requests 130 horses and "about 25 teams for the waggons of the spare ammunition." In 1795, Pickering would succeed Knox as Secretary of War in Washington's cabinet. Provenance: G.A. Baker sale, 21 April 1942, lot 32.
