Letter Signed, "HKnox," as Secretary of War, to Samuel Hodgdon, requesting that he report the cost per ton of having cast 24 and 36 pounder cannons and corresponding cannonballs. 1 page, 4to; partial separations at folds with nearly complete separation at middle horizontal fold, few scattered inexpert repairs with cello tape or glue verso, staining at folds near right edge, small hole at upper right corner, signature bold. "Please let me know this morning for how much per ton we may have heavy cannon of 24 and 36 pounders cast, the first being 2 and the other towards 3 tons, not less than 56 hundred weight, nor more than three tons.
"Also the price which 24 and 36 pound ball would cost per ton. These ought not considering their size to be much more than pig metal."
