Kotzebue's 1815-18 voyage aboard the brig Ryurik explored the Bering Strait region in search of a passage to the Arctic Ocean. While the passage was not found, much of the northwest coast of Alaska was described for the first time. The work, first issued in German and Russian, is also of note for its descriptions of California and Hawaii.
