Atlas volume issued to supplement the 1812 revised and enlarged edition of the 1774 Kaitai shinsho, the first modern anatomical treatise in Japanese, translated by Genpaku Sugita from the 1733 Dutch version of Kulmus's 1731 Anatomische Tabellen. The illustrations were completely re-engraved from Kulmus's work for this edition. A milestone in the history of Japanese medicine, the publication of Sugita's translation marked the transition from reliance on traditional Chinese teachings to a modern approach to the study of anatomy based strictly upon human dissection. "As the first public demonstration in print of the superiority of Western anatomical theory, Kaitai shinsho was directly responsible for Japanese acceptance of the European view of the body"--Norman 1196 (1774 original edition).
