Keith, Elizabeth (1887-1956)
The Wonson Scholar and his Disciples.

Tokyo: S. Watanabe Color Print Co.,1921.

Color woodcut on thick Japanese paper, full margins; signed lower right; 350 x 240 mm; 13¾ x 9½ in.

Born in Scotland, Keith was a self-taught artist and one of only a few foreigners to visit Korea during the early twentieth century. In 1915, Keith's intended short stay in Tokyo extended to nine years. The publisher Watanabe Shozaburo discovered her Korean watercolors in an exhibition in Tokyo, and encouraged her to take up woodblock printing. She worked to master the medium and exhibited her prints internationally while continuing to travel throughout Asia. She became well known for her prints of daily life in China, Korea, Japan, and the Philippines.
