Kent, Corita (1918-1986)
Be of Love (a little) More Careful than of Everything.

Los Angeles, circa 1963.

Color screenprint, full margins, signed and numbered "9" in ink, lower margin; 280 x 245 mm; 11 x 9⅝ in.

Sister Corita Kent entered the religious order Immaculate Heart of Mary at the age of 18 and later taught and headed the art department at Immaculate Heart College. The compositions of her artwork blend religious imagery with song lyrics, poetry, and slogans; the present screenprint takes a verse from be of love by e.e. cummings. The poem must have resonated with Kent, as she revisited these verses on several occasions, in 1959, in the present series of 1963, and again in 1967 & 1970. As the 1960's progressed, Kent's works became more political, addressing social injustices. In 1968, Kent left the order to live a secular life.
