Khayyam, Omar (1048-1131) & Edward Fitzgerald, trans. (1809-1883)
Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, Thomas Cleland's copy.

Frankfurt: Ingeborg Anning in the house printing office of Schriftgiesserei D. Stempel AG, 1939.

Quarto; presentation copy with Ingeborg Anning's visiting card laid-in, inscribed in ink to renowned American book designer and artist Thomas Maitland Cleland, "My first effort! To Tom" dated February 1939; in an attractive brocade cloth binding embroidered with exotic birds, moths, flowers and branches of roses, all edges gilt; with Cleland's property label affixed to front pastedown; contained in the original linen-backed cardboard box with the printed spine label preserved; 8 3/4 x 7 in.

Thomas Maitland Cleland (1880-1964) worked for leading fine presses such as Calson, his own Cornhill, and Heritage Press. Though not much is known about the designer of the present lot, Ingeborg Anning, it is possible that Cleland was a mentor figure who gave her instruction about book design. In commemoration and thanks for this training, Anning likely presented Cleland with this book, her first accomplishment.
