Pet Sematary is based on Stephen King's experiences residing with his family in the small village of Orrington, Maine in 1979. The King family lived near a road frequently littered with roadkill, behind which the neighborhood children created a "pet sematary." When his son was almost struck and his daughter's cat was killed, King was moved by fears for his family to write Pet Sematary. The work is also loosely based on W.W. Jacob's short story, "The Monkey's Paw," in which a couple's wish to resurrect their son leads to dire consequences.
