Born in Buffalo, NY in 1932, Knowlton attended Milton Academy growing up, eventually training at Smith College and later at Columbia University's Teacher College. This large-scale industrial piece is emblematic of Knowlton's artistic project of using various types of media such as clay, sheet metal, concrete, copper, bronze, wicker, and others to break "conventional boundaries to create dialogues in line and form" by isolating a photograph of rusted pipes in a layered blanket background of black watercolor."
