KÄTHE KOLLWITZ
Der Gefesselte

Photolithograph and lithograph on cream wove paper, 1928. 285x194 mm; 11 1/4x7 3/4 inches, full margins. Edition of approximately only 32. Signed and inscribed "N. 17" in pencil, lower margin.

A very good impression of this extremely scarce print; we have found fewer than 6 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years.

Kollwitz made a drawing of this subject for the dust jacket for Jack London's novel The People of the Abyss, a work about the lives of the poor working class and the sordid living conditions in the East End of London in 1902, first published in London in 1903 and re-published as Menschen der Tiefe, Berlin, 1928. Klipstein 229; Knesebeck 241.
