The artist's inscription "Caveau des Innocents, Paris" refers to an underground, nocturnal meeting place cum speakeasy in central Paris, on the rue des Innocents adjacent to the rue des Halles, that was frequented by vagabonds and common thieves as well as voyeuristic aristocrats, artists, actors, middle-class professionals, shop-keepers and farmers alike, looking to experience a range of nightlife offered by the underbelly of Paris.
Kollwitz (1867-1945) visited Paris twice between 1902 and 1908, as she was entering the most productive point of her career and creating the series of etchings that comprise her Bauernkrieg (or Peasant War). In addition to sketching throughout Paris and frequently visiting the major museums, she enrolled in classes at the Académie Julian in order to learn sculpture.
