The Swetzoff Gallery, Boston, owned by brothers Hyman and Seymour Swetzoff, opened in 1948. The Gallery was known for dealing in works by various artists, including Hyman Bloom, James Ensor, Elie Nadelman and Käthe Kollwitz. In 1954, Hyman Swetzoff purchased a terracotta cast of Kollwitz's The Lovers (Pieta) from Galerie Gerd Rosen, an auction house in Berlin. Not without controversy, Swetzoff contracted Modern Art Foundry in Long Island City to create a re-cast, limited edition of The Lovers, which soon caught the attention of the artist's son, Dr. Hans Kollwitz. Swetzoff and Dr. Kollwitz worked together to place bronzes in public and private collections. The original cast was given to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
