L. DAMARÉ (?-1927) PARISIANA / PARIS S'AMUSE. 1905.
50x35 inches, 127x89 cm. Charaire, Sceaux.
Condition B+: repaired tears in margins and image; restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; minor restored loss in bottom right corner.
In the early years of the 20th century Damare found regular work for the Parisian music halls, designing at least four posters for Parisiana. The "romantic" notion of the sexy showgirl and the lurid aristocrat was routinely used to advertise the revues held at these venues. Damare's poster fits neatly into this genre, and while a cliché, it is certainly an appealing one. He also pays a visual tribute to an earlier icon in that his cats, crawling among Parisian rooftop chimneys, are a nod to Manet's 1868 posters for Champfleury's Les Chats.
