Of all the International Brigades that fought during the Spanish Civil War, the German Thalmann Brigade arguably had the most personal connection to the struggle, coming as they did from Germany, with the idealistic goal of ending fascism in Spain. They were a well-trained unit and quite familiar with the evils of fascism. This poster is calling them to the front, probably to defend Madrid, which they did successfully for more than two years. This poster, issued by the PSU (Partido Socialistica Unificado - United Socialist Party of Cataluna) wishes the Germans well in the "Sacred fight for Liberty." In his boldly stylized posters, Goni always emphasizes the soldier's virility. Carteles 218, Art and Power p. 98.
