L. KEIZER (DATES UNKNOWN) SABENA / RAPIDITE. Circa 1935.
39 1/4x24 1/4 inches. Studio E.L.K.A.
Condition B: wrinkles, creases and abrasions in image.
Up until the discovery of this poster, the only thing that was known about Keizer is that in 1933 he worked for Sabena, illustrating timetables in a very mundane and realistic way. This poster, which has never been seen before, is very different. It is the best Belgian aviation poster of the period. Three stylized eagles cut across the wake of a soaring airplane, as if they were trying to catch up with the machine. Concentric circles, which evoke a propeller, also show a speedometer. At 250 km an hour, this plane is, indeed, the epitome of Rapidite. Keizer does a beautiful airbrush job, and the typography, reminiscent of neon lighting, also bespeaks exceptional modernity. If you add to this brilliant rendering the dynamic of the composition you have what can easily be considered a landmark of Art Deco.
