L. MARCI CONCERT DU GRAND CAFÉ UNIVERSEL.
43x311/2 inches. G. Marci, Brussels.
Condition B+: restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; expert restoration including overpainting and in-layed replaced paper.
No historical information exists about Marci, leading us to believe he was a lithographer with some artistic training. This sole legacy of his work was printed using zincography. The poster is vertically divided into two, with an allegorical representation of the café on the right (drinking a glass of beer), and a realistic rendition of the huge café on the other side. Marci was clearly familiar with the works of Eugene Grasset and Alphonse Mucha and has borrowed many elements of their art, including the Byzantine woman, flowers and mosaic and applied them to his own decorative vision of Art Nouveau.
