FRENCH REVOLUTION: "A GREAT DEAL HAS BEEN OBTAINED BY OUR REVOLUTION OF JULY" LAFAYETTE, GILBERT DU MOTIER; MARQUIS DE. Autograph Letter Signed, "Lafayette," to "My dear Sir," in English, introducing Adolphe Barrot, directing him to the correspondence of [U.S. Minister to France William Cabell] Rives for an account of the events of the revolution in July, expecting no new campaigns in Belgium but anticipating only a few months of peace, hoping to restrain the tyranny of Dom Miguel [King of Portugal], and stating that it is his duty to vote for the French appropriation [Chamber of Deputies appropriations bill to pay for Ten Days' Campaign in Belgium]. 1 page, small 4to, with integral blank; few short closed tears in right edge, folds. Paris, 28 October 1831

Additional Details

"It is probable the five powers of the Conference, in their seeming good understanding, will prevent a new explosion of war in Belgium; I would not however insure the continuation of a general peace for more than a few months. We hope something will be done this winter to put down the ever increasing tyranny of dom Miguel whose name of Monster, depend upon it, has not been misapplied.
"When the affair of the claims, the details of which I left to my friend Mr. Rives to communicate to you, will have passed the senate, it will be my double duty, as an American, and as a deputy, to talk and vote for the French appropriation. . . ."
