LAFAYETTE MAYNARD DIXON (1875-1946) OVERLAND MONTHLY / JUNE. 1895. 15x11 inches, 38x28 cm. Condition A-: minor loss and tears in lower left margin into text; light creasing in margins and image. Paper. Known more for his Western imagery, here Dixon pays homage to Pélé, the Goddess of volcanoes, who lives in the Halemaumau crater on the island of Hawaii. The June 1895 issue of the Overland Monthly (volume 25, issue 150) was dedicated to stories about Hawaii. "The Overland poster for June, representing the Hawaiian goddess Pélé, is also out of print and in great demand by collectors" (Overland Monthly, March 1896, p. 302).
