Founded in 1868, and first edited by Bret Harte, the Overland Monthly was the West coast's answer to the literary magazines of the East coast. In May of 1895 Dixon's first posters for the publication appeared. Ultimately famous for his Western images in the Santa Fe School style, these early woodblocks, one in red and black, the other in yellow and black, show the young artist's skill with design and composition.
