Additional Details

Originally from the Collection of Thomas E. Curran III.

A rare oversized print of Lange's iconic Depression-era image. The photograph was printed by General Graphics, a Bay Area-based laboratory house, which Lange employed to produce her photographic prints.

The firm had first produced the photographs for Lange's retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, in New York, in 1966, in which another, earlier print of this image was featured.

A letter from Paula B. Freedman, which accompanies the photograph and is dated August 27, 2012, indicates that this photograph "was acquired by my late husband, Thomas E. Curran III, in the late 1970s, from General Graphics, the authorized printers of photographs from Lange's negatives. Tom was a photographer as well as the curator of photographs in the Oakland Museum History Department. "
