In 1937, an extravagant 3-day event celebrated the opening of a new highway from Mount Whitney to Death Valley, allowing drivers safer access to roads from the lowest elevation in North America to the base of the highest mountain. The event was conceived by Father John Crowley, a catholic priest who hoped for better transportation for the locals, as well as a boost in tourism for the area. Father Crowley spoke of the event: "The mountains and the desert had been joined; the descendants of the two parties who had suffered in the heat and the snow of California thus symbolized the smashing of the barriers that had spelled death for their forefathers."
