LAUREN HALSEY (1987- )

Kingdom Splurge.
Archival inkjet print. 482x723 mm; 19x28½ inches. Edition of 10 + 2 AP. 2016.
In 2016 Lauren Halsey transformed the space of Recess Art, Brooklyn, New York into Kingdom Splurge (4), a two-month long project that metamorphosed Recess into an interplanetary liquid environment composed of hyperreal gardens, fantasy landscapes, and pools of beauty water. Inspired by Kingdom Splurge's "Funkifesto II" and afrofuturism this print was executed for the exhibition.

Lauren Halsey builds sculptures and environments that blends ephemera she gathers in her neighborhood of South Central Los Angeles with ancient Egyptian architectural styles, hyperreal nature, technicolors, outer space, and Funk. Inspired by the artistic linage of Watts Towers she looks at the past, present and contemplates the future simultaneously. She holds an MFA from Yale University (2014) and a BFA from California Institute of the Arts (2012). Halsey recently completed a residency at The Studio Museum in Harlem (2014-2015) and is the recipient of the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Emerging Artist Award (2014) and an Alice Kimball English Traveling Fellowship (2013). In 2023, Halsey built a site-specific installation commissioned for the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and was commissioned to create an installation for the Arsenale of the 60th Biennale di Venezia.
