Additional Details

Arthur was first introduced to the Babar series in the 1946 book Babar et ce coquin d'Arthur, portrayed as the mischievous young cousin of Babar, with whom Laurent identified. Growing up, Laurent's mother and father would tell him and his brother a bedtime story about a little elephant and his family, leading to the publication of Histoire de Babar in 1931, the first of seven story books by his father Jean de Brunhoff. After Jean's untimely passing in 1937, the Babar series went on a long hiatus. At the time Laurent was only 12 years old, but in adulthood Laurent assumed his father's role as writer and illustrator with Babar et ce coquin d'Arthur being his first contribution to the series. It was well received by readers, many of whom did not recognize a change in author or illustrator. Laurent went on to write and illustrate dozens more books in the Babar series, as well as several others not featuring elephants.
